题目:Transport Phenomena at Small Scales: Physics, Chemistry, and Data
主讲:Rui Qiao,Professor, Laboratory of Transport Phenomena for Advanced Technologies
Department of Mechanical Engineering, Virginia Tech
Abstract:Transport phenomena are at the core of numerousengineeringtechnologies. Those occurring at large scales, with their rich nonlinear physics, have been the focus of past research. Study of the transport phenomena at small scales, initiated a few centuries ago bysome curious minds, has recently become the frontier of transport phenomena research. At a first glance, these transport phenomena can be boring due to the apparent lack of nonlinearity. Here we present our computational research on transport phenomena at small scales, with a focus on the role of physical chemistry in such transport and on the emerging role of data in this field. We first examine the ion transport in supercapacitors and identify some generalities of such transport at single-molecule dimensions. We next examine oil droplet and water transport in shales and highlight the importance of chemical specificity of multiphase transport. Finally, we present on-going work of using deep learning to determine the effective transport properties of porous media.
Bio: Dr. Qiao received B.S. degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and M.S. degree from Tsinghua University. He obtained Ph.D. and postdoctoral training at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was a faculty at Clemson University and joined Virginia Tech in Fall 2014. He has worked on diverse topics including Nano fluidics, desalination, shale gas, and electrical energy storage. These works share the theme of clarifying the essential physics of interfacial and transport phenomena underlying advanced technologies to shape and accelerate their development.
