讲座题目：Vorticity effects in drop impact onto a pool

讲座摘要：The impact of a liquid drop onto a pool of the same liquid is a canonical problem in fluid mechanics. Behind the apparent simplicity of the problem, it still challenges the experimental and numerical techniques to understand the fast dynamics of splashing and air entrapment. Early studies have neglected the effect of viscosity to understand some aspects of the impact. We show that even though the effects of viscosity are limited to small regions, they are still important to explain the complexities of splashing. We combine high-speed imaging and large parallel numerical simulations to show how the shedding of vorticity in the liquid during the impact explains the morphology of the splash, from multiple jets to irregular splashing. We also solve the mystery of the large bubble entrapment that was first reported by Pumphrey and Elmore in 1990.
